Gen Z has finally shown Modi’s regime who the real boss is. The protest was bound to happen. The revolution was bound to take place. In this blog post, I will share my views on the Gen Z protest that recently took place in India.
Young people were tired of paper leaks in India. There is a paper-leak mafia that effectively controls the education system. These mafias do not care about the hard work of young Indians who study for hours and prepare for exams like NEET-UG, engineering entrance exams, and many others. Education mafias care only about money and about destroying the futures of young Indians.
The movement was led by a satirical group called the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). It began as an online response after unemployed youth were compared to “cockroaches.” It was not only young Indians preparing for entrance exams who participated; unemployed youth across India also put in their blood and sweat to raise concerns about rising unemployment rates.
For many weeks, the Modi government did not take the protest seriously. The students were demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for failing to take any responsibility. The CJP also demanded that all cases against students be dismissed and that every student detained by the police be released. Their third demand was compensation for the families of students who died by suicide after being affected by the NEET medical entrance exam paper leak.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest and went on a hunger strike. He was forcibly removed from the protest site by the police and taken to hospital. Police used tear gas and batons to stop the demonstrators. Videos of the crackdown spread widely and increased public support.
The Modi government underestimated the power of young people. The regime assumed the protests would last only a couple of days and then fade away. Modi was dead wrong. In the end, the education minister resigned from his post.
I want to say this very clearly: Modi does not believe in democracy. He has held zero proper press conferences. All he cares about is his rich friends. He cannot take any unscripted questions from the media. A large portion of the Indian media runs a propaganda campaign for Modi’s government. I am glad people are finally waking up and demanding answers from him. More awareness is needed to hold this disastrous government accountable for the scandals and corruption that have taken place since 2014.
